Laborers Local 42 awards $8,000 in Scholarships to Members’ Children
Credit to Tim Rowden, Editor in Chief, The Labor Tribune
Laborers Local 42 recently awarded three members’ children with $2,000 scholarships through the union’s annual Larry Flinn Memorial Scholarship program.
The son of two other Local 42 members won a Missouri Kansas Laborers’ District Council (MKLDC) Opportunity Scholarship, which was also for $2,000.
This year’s scholarship winners are:
• Reilan Derryberry, the son of Local 42 member Steve Derryberry. He’ll be attending Missouri Baptist University in Creve Coeur, Mo., studying business administration with a focus on finance and playing on the university bowling team.
• Mariah Williams, the daughter of Local 42 member Malik Williams and Myesha Williams. She’ll be attending the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., studying computer science.
Not present for the awards program was Cailin Ewing, the son of Laborers Local 42 Law Enforcement Division member Modeste Ewing. Cailin is currently a student at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., where he’s studying computer science.
• Drew Elsenrath, the son of Local 42 members Nichola and Dale Elsenrath, and grandson of retired Local 42 Vice President Danny Jenkins, was the winner of this year’s MKLDC Opportunity Scholarship. He will be attending LaGrange University in Hannibal, Mo., studying business marketing and playing for the university baseball team.
Local 42 has awarded 116 recipients with scholarships totaling $150,900 since starting the scholarship program in 1987 in memory of the local’s late Business Manager Larry Flinn.
Flinn’s nephew, Brandon Flinn, Local 42 business manager/secretary-treasurer and business manager of the Missouri Kansas Laborers’ District Council, presented the scholarships in a ceremony at Local 42’s union hall on July 19.
“I have the pleasure of sitting on the Larry Flinn Scholarship Committee and all of you have tremendous accolades,” Flinn told the winners. “Your grades are tremendous, and you have a bright future, all of you. We couldn’t be more proud.”
Flinn encouraged the recipients to remember their parents’ hard work and the value of Organized Labor and collective bargaining in their future endeavors.
“When workers band together to collectively bargain, they have a tremendous impact to bargain wages, benefits and pensions,” Flinn said. “It’s really a cornerstone of American society.
“Please remember that when you’re future leaders in the business community or wherever your college education takes you. Remember the hard work that your parents put in and the fact that them being a part a union really afforded a middle-class lifestyle. Because there are parts of this country where union density is much lower for jobs that are similar to the jobs that your parents do every day. Those folks aren’t able to afford a middle-class lifestyle.
“The union movement in this country is a cornerstone to the middle-class. Just remember that as you rise through the ranks as leaders of this community as you grow up. You’ve all got a tremendous upside and tremendous potential. I wish you best in your endeavors and your studies.”
